Type O Negative at the Donington Festival 1996 (28/6)

by Nikki Brooks

I went to Donington with my friend, Janette, from Bristol who, bless her heart, had a decent camera with her. Firstly, we checked the line-up for the day and found that TON were due to play at 3.50pm, instead of 6pm as previously advertised.
The second stage, put on by Kerrang, was quite small, but the view was adequate. LOADS of users were waiting for TON to appear and a big cheer erupted when they did.
They only had a half hour slot and launched straight into Christian Woman. Oh those deep vocal tones. Janette took some photos. When Peter is holding a wine bottle it looks really small!
They finished the song and Peter said "Hello, we're Type O Negative from Brooklyn and this is our new single, My Girlfriend's Girlfriend." Definitely a bit different from previous singles. I need to hear it again though. I'll try to find it this week, now I'm back in London. Last song was Black No 1 and everyone in the audience was singing with them and then they were gone. The applause was deafening. Obviously a successful first appearance at Donington.

DONINGTON MINI INTERVIEW

After TON had played their set I tried to make contact with Rich Koffer via the Show Sec users, but while waiting I learnt that TON were going to be in the signing tent AFTER Korn. Aha, plotted the Nik, I'll try to get an interview with Peter.
So, wearing the e-mail list t-shirt, I shoved my way through to the barrier and asked one of the Show Sec if I could do an interview. Mike Peak from Kerrang came out to talk to me and I told him I was from the e-mail list and wanted to do an interview and that my friend would like to take some photos. So, we got in at the front of the TON queue and waited. Thank you Mike.
Yes, we were first in. I asked Peter if I could do a mini interview wth him for the e-mail list. He said YES! He then said "That's a very interesting T-shirt you have there, can I have it?". My reply was "Er, sorry, it wouldn't fit you" (sorry Peter but it took me ages to get my mitts (hands) on this T-shirt and, well, English ladies don't take their t-shirts off in front of men they don't know - HA HA!).
I took my sunglasses off and gave him the benefit of the full emerald gaze, actually he seemed quite taken aback! So here's the mini interview conducted while he was furiously scribbling on lots of free Kerrang postcards given to the fans waiting in the queue.

NIK: Your first Donington, how was it for you?

PETER: Very nice.

NIK: It was such a short set, only 3 songs.

PETER: Unfortunately we only had half an hour.

NIK: Will you come back next year?

PETER: If we are allowed to.

NIK: Will you be touring the UK later this year?

PETER: Yes, we tour Europe in November.

NIK: When is the release date in the UK for October Rust?

PETER: August 19th in Europe.

NIK: Thank you very much.

PETER: Thank you.

NIK: The e-mail list is very good, you should read it sometime.

PETER: I haven't got a computer

So that's true then. Pity he doesn't read the list, I'm sure things like the Ogre Salami episode would amuse him. At this point some bouncer was trying to move me on, but Janette took some photos of the band which I'm looking forward to receiving later this week. Hopefully someone will put them on their web page. It would be nice to have Dave and Jan do that, if they are good enough to scan in.

Wow, my legs were shaking, and I had to sit down when I got back outside. Peter has the most beautiful hypnotic green eyes I have ever seen, much greener than mine unless, of course, he wears contacts? Also, his photos do NOT do him justice, he has very nice skin too. Janette is in lust with Josh!
Unfortunately I didn't meet up with Rich Koffer, but I took Janette backstage to the hospitality area during Ozzy's set. Thank you to Phil Alexander, editor of Kerrang, who took a photo of Janette and myself backstage.
I tried to get the album yesterday from my usual shop, but could not. I hadn't seen last weeks's HBB so I didn't know that the UK release date is in September. Neither did Peter, obviously.
