Review of the Type O Negative show in Austin

By: fire ghost

The concert was at Southpark meadows. Large concrete flat area (short person hell) and a grassy hill which was great for kicking back on for the non-Type O shows.:)
With three acts, roadies would charge the stage like the Indy 500 pit crew between acts. Type O managed to wiggle their way in. The most visible one was Kenny who kept himself busy tuning. Peter was lurking backstage talking (actually laughing and smiling which I thought was an unknown thing) until zero hour. Everyone else was in black, Peter was wearing a neon green tank top ("Yikes! That's green.") After the bottle of red wine was in place, everything got started. Peter throughout the show had his haired tied back until the last song. He pretty much stayed put where he was in front of the mike. The band was very workmanlike in their approach. Josh looked positively possessed in front of the keyboards. Got to see for the first time how much vocals the rest of the band contribute. Actually, got to see for the first time how the band acted as a unit. More to the point: got to see them for the first time actually move (You mean Type O really exists outside of a pissy newsgroup?)

Sepultura was the media favorite in the Austin newspapers to "take over the show". Although there was a lot of Sep's fans out there, the crowd response was suprisingly sleepy. Type O's crowd when it rolled forward was more wild and into the show. Looked to me that they took over. There was a mosh pit a la MTV up front, the more traditional slamdancing towards the left, and and even more old-fashioned slugfest on the right. Of course, Ozzys crowd was huge. I came for Type O, so I hung out by the hill and kicked back for that part. Bought the Type O bandana, didn't see anything for sale except that and the Christian Woman, Casket Crew, and the female 69 t-shirt. The best item was the football jersey marked "Ozzy: 666". $125. Yeah, sure.

Song order:

Before they ended off Christian Woman Peter announced how honored (no shit, he was that formally polite--which was great to see instead of the "We rule" bull) he was to be performing before us in Austin and opening for Ozzy. And he said "Instead of applauding us, why don't you applaud yourselves instead, because Without you, we're nothing."

Highly cool. Good to see them! Can't wait to see them after there next album, but aren't we all??!! (Yes, I'm happy. Piss off.)
